What are successful entrepreneurs made of? How do they manage to get what they want? I used to ask myself these questions all the time. Sometimes you see people with great ideas, great teams and money, who are not successful. And some others who don’t even have half of that and still manage to succeed.
My personal experience and mingling with successful entrepreneurs have taught me that they share these four qualities:
They have the right beliefs
Successful entrepreneurs have a set of beliefs about themselves and about what they can do that allows them to have the right mindset to be successful.
People are always going to succeed in whatever they believe they can do. If a person doesn’t believe that he/she can do something, that person will probably surrender after experiencing failure for the first time. On the contrary, people who believe in themselves will keep going, no matter what, and will not succumb to failure.
They set up goals
Believing in what you can do it’s extremely important, but it won’t take you anywhere if you don’t take action. That’s why successful entrepreneurs set up goals. I love a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson that says:
“The world makes way for the man who knows where he is going”
And guess what does this man have? Goals.
People with goals succeed because they know where they’re going. They have a clear vision of what they want and where they want to be, and they never lose sight of it. Besides, they understand that goals need some time, effort and dedication and that there are things that one needs to give up in order to gain others.
They take action
From setting up goals, successful entrepreneurs proceed to take action.
They trust and love themselves, and have the willingness to do whatever it takes to achieve their target knowing that they aren’t going to see results since the very first day.
Normally the process to get results works as follows:
Week 1 - You make a great effort, but get zero results.
Week 2 - You make a bit less effort, but still get no results.
Week 3 - You make way less effort (as you have already created a habit) and you start seeing results.
From here onward is when the magic starts to happen: more motivation, more results and less effort.
Depending on the task or project you are tackling, it can take some more time than just one week per stage, but the way the progress works would be the same.
They stay positive
Successful entrepreneurs stay positive by doing 2 things: having a positive self-talk and surrounding themselves with positive people.
Having a positive self-talk is crucial because thoughts guide our behaviour. That voice inside your head has a huge impact on who you are and how you live your life. People with a negative self-talk will end up demotivated and way far from their goals.
Successful entrepreneurs do not castigate themselves for not having made enough progress or having made mistakes. They celebrate small wins and are nice to themselves.
The people you hang out with also affects the way you think. Successful entrepreneurs stay in positive work environments surrounding themselves with positive people, they embrace relationships that empower, inspire and motivate them to be their best.
Embrace these qualities and you will become a better entrepreneur.
